Basic Care

Water, wind, and sun destroy mountains and will also destroy artwork. UV light will discolor wood, break down finishes, and destroy paint. Human hands are also destructive so greater care and maintenance will be needed for pieces that are handled frequently. The greater the exposure to water, wind, sun, and people, the faster the destruction of the art.

Generally, I finish paintings with a varnish and carvings with oil, shellac, and wax. Paintings should hold up well with minor cleaning and dusting for the remainder of my lifetime, after that I won’t be much help to you. If wood pieces look dry, add oil, let dry, then add wax. If wood surfaces look dull, then add wax. For pieces with mixed finishes or made of mixed media, I recommend using a wax that uses solvents which won’t damage the various surfaces. Solvents used in wax can vary widely. Some wax products may be fine for wood but dissolve paint or other finishes. Choose wisely.

Remember The MK Guarantee. The way in which you care for the piece and the Fates will help determine how long it lasts. If for some reason the art you purchased from me does last forever, I offer my condolences for the fortune you’ll spend on dust rags alone.
